By Steve Lyon Editor Hot August Nights is over for another year, and none too soon. Many a retina has been seared from staring at the blinding chrome of a thousand classic cars. Nevadans are big on their car shows. I know a few people in Fallon who have poured many hours, not to mention the entire contents of their wallets, into a vintage rod. They buff the paint until they get tennis elbow on the night before a show and shine. Every summer they travel from Winnemucca to Ely with their classic car in tow. Once there they pull out the lawn chairs and sit a spell. There's instant camaraderie among guys when it comes to car talk. Thursday, August 4, 2005 BY LEANNE SMITH News Staff Reporter They could have planned a golf outing or a lot of other events, but organizers of this summer's Holy Spirit Catholic Church School fundraiser decided to be a bit more splashy. Their 15-mile Helluva Cruise coming up Saturday night will revive a much-loved local event and take classic car buffs from the heavenly confines of the church grounds in Green Oak Township to the center of Hell. "We've got a lot of things planned to make this a very special cruise,'' said event chairman Todd Borek of Hamburg Township. "We wanted to do something unique that would bring all kinds of people to our parish.'' The imports took a backseat over the weekend and made way for the forefathers of the auto enthusiast industry at the 2nd Annual Classic Car Show, sponsored by Newstalk K57, the Acanta Mall and the Rock. Although the weather prevented some pre-registered owners from taking out their hidden treasures, enough classic owners showed up to display their rides and make the event a success. "The 10 cars we had still made for a pretty nice show," says Ron Diaz of K-57, who organized the event. "It drew a crowd that pretty much stayed throughout the day." Visitors got to see cars that rarely see the light of day, such as Erwin Tudela's 1932 Ford Roadster, Jose Cruz's 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner, Alan Sablan's gorgeous gray 1965 Chevy Corvette and Eileen Benavente-Blas' 1952 Jaguar Roadster. By Angie Valencia-Martinez, Staff Writer HANSEN DAM -- Donning a Dodgers baseball cap and a stole with hot-rod flames and a checker-flag border, the Rev. Cirilo Bailon on Saturday sprinkled holy water on Tony Carrillo's 1949 Chevy pickup. Bailon said a quick prayer and made the sign of the cross, asking for divine intervention. "Dad gave it to me when I was 12," said Carrillo, a 30-year-old car fanatic from Hemet. "The motor didn't run ... You name it, it was wrong. "I rebuilt the motor, primered it, put on new tires. I made it here. I want it blessed." Panamera Should Hit Showrooms In 2009 POSTED: 5:42 am CDT July 28, 2005 Porsche and four-doors aren't usually used in the same sentence, but the German car builder is planning to change that with its Panamera sports coupe. Porsche officials gave the go-ahead for the new four-seater that will blend the high-performance of its classic 911 and the interior roominess of its Cayenne model, according to an online news release. The Porsche Web site also said the name comes from the legendary Carrera Panamericana long-distance race held in Mexico. The Panamera is expected in showrooms in 2009. |

| Final Thunderbird comes off Assembly Line |
| 07.13.05 (1:47 am) [edit] |
|
It was a bittersweet moment last week as the last Thunderbird was driven off the assembly line at Wixom Assembly Plant. “We’re sad to see this car go,” said Larry Fisher, Dealer Relations manager at Wixom Assembly Plant. “But I, along with all the other employees here at the plant, am tremendously proud to have been part of the revival of this icon.” The Thunderbird has come full circle since it was first introduced in 1955. Back then, it was a two-seater designed to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette. In 1958, the T-Bird was reconfigured to seat four people; it remained that way until production ended with the 1997 model year. In 2002, the Thunderbird was reborn with a retro look that harkened back to the early days of the automotive classic. More than 4 million Thunderbirds have been sold in the last 50 years. The last T-Bird was the 1,160,827th one to roll off the line at Wixom. Fisher said that the Thunderbird will always be a car that touches an emotional chord with people. The car elicits memories of the ‘50s and the movie “American Graffiti,” which featured the classic automobile. Restored city fire truck from 1924 among the over 400 'sculptures' Saturday, July 9, 2005 BY ART AISNER News Staff Reporter Engine No. 5, the first gas-powered fire apparatus purchased by the city of Ann Arbor, in 1924, was on city streets again after decades of dormancy and 40 years after it was officially retired by the city. It was one of more than 400 antique, exotic, classic, concept and art vehicles on display during 11th annual show, which converts the heart of downtown Ann Arbor into a walking auto show for eight hours. And just like the vintage roadsters and classic muscle cars featured in the show each year, the American LaFrance fire truck drew continual crowds of curious onlookers and history buffs. "It caught her eye more than any other car here and it is quite a sight,'' said Vania Rasche, referring to her granddaughter Isabella, 3, who climbed into the driver's seat to ring the truck's 75-pound, nickel-plated warning bell. By Todd G. Higdon / Daily News Staff Writer GRANBY - One of the biggest attractions for the 22nd annual Old Mining Town Days was the Highway 60 Car Show, held last Saturday. More than 75 cars and trucks ranging from the early 1900s to today were on hand at the show. Owners of the vehicles started showing up at 8 a.m. at the Dick Smith Park. As they parked their vehicles, the fist thing they did was to clean up their vehicles and await for spectators to view the vehicles. "There is a lot of hard work that go into these cars," said Hershel Tanner of Granby, who was sporting a black 1951 Kaiser car. Tanner has had his 1951 Kaiser for about 15 years. "I worked for Kaiser Steel in Eagle Mountain, Calif. for 12 years," Tanner said. "Now the town is a ghost town." One day, after moving back to Granby, he went looking around at yard sales. By Andrew Dowd For the Marshfield News-Herald IOLA - It's the wood, not steel, that made featured cars at this year's Iola Old Car Show good in their heyday. Collector vehicles with wooden parts and accents, and antique wagons are the featured autos at the 33rd annual Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet, which will bring thousands of people to the small village this weekend. About 156,000 people attended last year's show, and Mary Schwartz expects even more this year if the weather is nice. An administrative assistant with Iola Old Car Show Inc., Schwartz helps coordinate 3,000 volunteers from 110 service organizations who work at the show. With a population of 1,300 people, Iola alone cannot accommodate the influx of visitors. by Bill Vance The little town of Bothwell lies nestled amid the corn and soybean fields of southwestern Ontario's Kent County. Now some 900 souls, Bothwell was born during the Ontario oil boom of the 1860s. Houses were built in a day and some 20 hotels provided food, beds and spirits.
