Keeping It Clean - How To Keep Your Collection Looking Good
06.25.04 (9:37 pm)   [edit]
There are many great articles available regarding the cleaning of diecast collectibles.

Here is one of the better ones we've read.

Diecast Hygiene
...caring for your prized collectible cars, the right way!
By George S. Bojaciuk

Brushes

Why on earth would anyone need a brush? Ok, how many of you have lost parts to the dreaded dust rag? I have purchased several brushes whose only purpose is reserved for dusting. I have a 1" camel hair brush which I use for general purpose dusting, a large rounded brush for detail work on interior areas and a brush generally found with electric razors for the cleaning of dried waxes in hard to reach places.

If you take a stroll down the makeup isle you'll be able to find all kinds of things appropriate for your models. Just takes an open mind, that's all. Make-up brushes are awesome for general-purpose dusting and cost pennies as compared to a 1" camel hairbrush. A neat trick for stubborn dust on the inside of the windshield, especially a hardtop model, is to brush the outside "glass" until a static charge is created. Then all you need to do is drag the brush over the outside of the "glass" and the particle clings, right out to the edge.

New Release Ertl Outdoor Sportsman
06.22.04 (8:49 pm)   [edit]
News from Ertl:

Ertl Outdoor Sportsman 06/22/2004

Hunting was a way of life for Dale Earnhardt

Dale Earnhardt was the type of outdoorsman who was happiest sitting in a tree stand chilled to the bone - hand warmers in his pocket and ice in his moustache - awaiting the emergence of a trophy buck, or walking the trails patiently hunting the elusive wild turkey

From the time he was a small boy, hunting was a way of life for Dale Earnhardt, whose passion for the outdoors and the shooting sports was second to none. The respect for guns and for the outdoors Dale learned from his father is something he passed on to his own children, and he regarded hunting and shooting as a valuable part of his heritage. He worked diligently promoting hunter and gun safety, and each Dale Earnhardt collectible figure is a tribute to his respect and love of the great outdoors.

Diecast Boats and Ships Float to the Top of the Collectibles Market
06.17.04 (6:17 am)   [edit]
Diecast Boats - popular, more popular than you might expect.

When it comes to diecast collectibles, most people think cars, right away. Next trucks, army vehicles, maybe jets and other military diecast.

How many think boats? Traditionally, when you think of a model boat, you think wood, you think of a ship in a bottle, you think of the hours and hours it might take to build one.

Naturally, many of these sets are truck, trailer, and boat combos. But it goes much further than that. You can start with a Nascar diecast combo for around 10 bucks, but you can also get ships.

You can get a Carnival Cruise ship for example, 1:1250, for under 50 bucks, from Dragon Models, part of their Dragon Waves promotion with Carnival.

Detail offered includes lifeboats, deck chairs, and much more. All on a model about 9" in length.

Also, we haven't even touched on the wood models available. That will be another blog.

Meanwhile, if you are looking to expand your hobby, think water, think float, think boat.

Metal Detecting for Diecast Treasures
06.15.04 (7:42 pm)   [edit]
It would be fair to say that one can find all kinds of junk with a metal detector.

It would also be fair to say that one can find numerous treasures with a metal detector.

Diecast collectors often find diecast treasures with metal detectors in fields, old homesteads etc.

The condition is not always the best. Often times a piece can be redone, fixed and painted, depending on the piece of course.

If you haven't thought about expanding that part of your hobby, maybe you want to. Think of the diecast that could be laying right outside your back door!

Need parts? No problem. You can purchase parts for your favorite piece on the internet.

Whatever the vehicle, train, boat, or plane, there are plenty buried under a few layers of yesterday, and maybe right under your nose.

You can peruse metal detectors and accessories at
Gales Metal Detectors

Diecast Collectors Resources
06.14.04 (8:47 pm)   [edit]
There are some great resources out there to help you indentify, and expand your collection to include the kinds of pieces you want, and the kinds of pieces that are significant to your collection.

Knowing we've left some out, here are some of the better sites for information related to diecast collecting:

Toy at Collect.com

Davids Wheels

Joe's Diecast Shack

Alterscale Diecast Boats

There are of course many more links to resources. If you feel your link should be here, email us for a link to your diecast related site.

If is important for diecast collectors to do proper research, and have good knowledge about what it is they possess, when trying to sell, or even insure valuable pieces.

Diecast Display Cases For Your Treasures
06.11.04 (8:39 pm)   [edit]
So, you've plunked down the family fortune on your favorite diecast pieces, over a period of several years. You have them boxed. Now and then, you like to take them out, and have a look.

Why not display your treasures in one of the various types of diecast cases on the market.

You can go all the way from custom made, individual oak cases, starting at around $55.00 for a wood back, with plexiglass front, and optional mirror bottom or back, and you can just go up from there. For diecast pieces, one can look at spending between $55.00 to $75.00 for a reasonable looking wood case.

You can also go simple, and cheap with plexiglass or plastic cases. If you spend $120.00 on a diecast car, and want to display it well, you are better off getting the case that matches the prize.

There are numerous links to case makers all over North America.

Here are a few:

Collectable Cases by Bill Greenan

USA Display

Mike's Custom Display Cases

Display Case Art

That is just a few case makers. There are some real artists out there, working hard to make custom cases for your collectible diecast.

Diecast Airplanes Big Hobby
06.08.04 (7:40 pm)   [edit]
In the world of collectible diecast, more often than not, automobiles are the primary collectible, that is, the products that get most of the attention.

Yet, there is a huge hobby out there many people perhaps haven't considered looking into. It is interesting, reasonably priced, and varied.

That is the hobby of diecast airplanes.

This category of diecast is just as diverse as one might expect.

Diecast models from WWI, to modern day jets, experimental aircraft, blimps, helicopters, and more!

With scales around 1:500 all the way to 1:32, this hobby is well represented. The pricing is also comparible, with models starting at anywhere from 8 or 9 dollars, all the way up to the 160-175 dollar range, for the larger scales.

Diecast by Corgi, MotorMax, and others make this a quality hobby as well.

If you are getting bored of the same old cars, or if you want to expand your hobby, and your knowledge of flight, then why not have a look at the world of Diecast Airplanes, and see what you've been missing.

Kmart Hosts Another Collector Days With Hot Wheels Diecast
06.06.04 (8:14 pm)   [edit]

This is a great idea to promote the diecast hobby, a great hobby for "kids" of all ages.

Special assortments have been provided to Kmart, prepared especially for this event! Within each 2004 72-car case, there will be 2 each of 12 first-to-market cars (but not necessarily 2003 First Editions™ models) plus the odd Treasure Hunt car, etc.

Welly Diecast - Awesome!
06.05.04 (9:09 pm)   [edit]
Welly Diecast is sporting some newer collectible vehicles in the lineup. Of those offerings, one of the nicest is the 1964 1/2 Mustang Coupe, 1:24. This great looking piece has all the styling you'd expect to see. Nice original factory look, lots of chrome, and that great Mustang grill. Can't beat it!

Welly Diecast is a U.K. manufacturer, and will be in collectible diecast manufacturing for years to come.

They say, "Welly Die Casting Factory Ltd has been specializing in diecast vehicles manufacturing business ever since 1979. Our main market segmentation has been recently switched from toy business into collectible scale model replicas ranging from 1/18, 1/24, 1/32, 1/36, 1/60 to 1/87.

Apart from manufacturing licensed model car replicas, we have been keeping abreast of the ever-changing market trends with detailed and sophisticated products we produced as promotional premiums to be launched to the markets. Hence, we anticipate dealing with any OEM/ODM projects with any customer's trademarks or logo to be fixed onto our licensed products as we realized the recent market tend to be favored with licensing products.

In the meantime, having an idea to consolidate and capture more market share, we have built a new factory next to our present factory with workers from existing 2000 increased to 3000 approximately in order to being catch up with our target volume production capacity yearly."

You can visit their website here to find out more about their company, and their great line of products.

Expert Hot Wheels Collector Guest Blog - HWDAVY
06.02.04 (6:06 pm)   [edit]
Hello, my name is David, and I've been a Hot Wheels collector for over 15 years now.

I started out collecting real classic cars around the time I met my soon to be wife. She couldn't see the logic and justify the expense of my hobby, so when I started collecting the little cars that sold for under a dollar, she felt it was the wiser thing to do financially and was happy to support me in my new hobby.

The real cars were sold pretty quickly and I started right in to collecting diecast with gusto. It wasn't long before she realized I was spending more on the little cars than the real ones. I gave up. She really flipped when we could no longer get the car in the garage.

Needless to say, I've probably gone way too far in collecting, and since our first born is now 3, and I've started a new business, it all goes bye bye. (priorities and all that, you understand)

I am still an active member of the T-Town Wheelers here in the N.E. Oklahoma area, and still maintain a collection of my various Ford/Lincoln/Mercury/Merk ur/Edsel toys that are on display in my office, but the rest goes.

There is loads of the late 70's to the mid to late 90's stuff. Loose, blister packed, and lots of miscellaneous items as well. I'm also needing to sell my custom Ford Aerostar, and Geo Tracker that I painted up Hot Wheels for a regional diecast collectors show that was held in N.E. Arkansas during the 90's. These are the ultimate items for the Hot Wheels collector or vendor/dealer.

Browse my auctions and see what is there. There should be something for most everyone. Get it while it is discounted at 15% to 20% off regular pricing!

Thanks, HWDAVY
