Diecast Publications - Learn More About Your Collection
09.11.04 (3:26 am)   [edit]
So, is it all about value? Is it all about quantity? Quality?

One place to start, no matter where your interest lays, would be with some diecast publications.

Good diecast publications can help you to understand the value of, or rarity of certain pieces in your collection.

Remember, despite these publications, often times, a piece is only worth what a buy will pay that day. In other words, not unlike the trading card craze of the 80's, there is a certain grey area when it comes to pricing. The key is to know what you have, know what the book says it is worth, and from there you can make an informed decision, if and when you decide to sell.

Careful research is always a benefit to your sale. If you don't see your particular prized possession showing the numbers you want to see, then wait it out. That is why it is important to be able to hang on to your collection, if it is an investment, until the market favors the sale.

On the other hand, if you have gone out and paid a handsome sum for a piece, in hopes of "flipping" it over then perhaps you can't afford to hang onto it. That is generally not the best way to make a buck from your collection.

There are several publications that may be of interest to the diecast collector. We'll list some here:

Collectors Guide to Diecast Toys and Scale Models: Identification & Values (Collector's Guide to)
by Dana Johnson - 1998 Paperback

The Die Cast Price Guide: Post War : 1946 to Present
by Douglas R. Kelly 1997 Paperback

Toy Car Collectors Guide: Identification and Values for Diecast, White Metal Other Automotive Toys & Models (Toy Car Collectors Guide)
by Dana Johnson 2002 Paperback

There are just a few. In the end, remember to research your piece well, do all the homework you need to, and hopefully maximize your investment.
