Pictures of an Aussie dream car are turning heads in the US, writes PAUL GOVER JAY Leno loves this car. So do Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Buster Rymes and Coca-Cola. It is an amazing reaction for a car that was created from one man's vision in Melbourne, is yet to get its final coat of paint and was not even started until this week. But the Redback Spyder is special . . . it is Australian. It was first seen at the Melbourne Motor Show in 2002 and now it is ready for the world More... http://carsguide.news.com.au/news/story_page/0" title="http://carsguide.news.com.au/news/story_page/0" target="_blank"http://carsguide.news.com.au/...,8269,15051785%5E21822,00 .html?from=rhn Classic Car News from The Classic Car Daily Hobby Wheels Deals Online Automotive Auction |

Monday, April 25, 2005 BY EMMA JACKSON News Staff Reporter Harry Short gave up his four-car garage for a wedding chapel, but he's not trading in his '67 Ford Galaxy convertible. Short and his wife, Betty, have been members of the Ypsilanti Area Street Rods for more than a dozen years, and while they have ventured into other stakes, including a day care center and wedding chapel, they maintain an interest in vintage automobiles. The Shorts have been active for many years in helping to host the Show and Shine car show, the first in a string of car shows that will cruise into Ypsilanti this summer. When the couple was introduced by mutual friends, Harry Short picked up his date in a 1966 Corvette coupe. The couple stuck, but Short altered his car collection. | Walter P. Chrysler Museum's 'Dodge Legends' Exhibit Celebrates the All-New Charger's Bold Heritage |
| 04.21.05 (7:01 pm) [edit] |
|
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The bold automotive heritage that was launched with the Dodge Brothers first touring car in 1915, and lives on in the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger, is showcased in "Dodge Legends," a special exhibition running May 24 - Aug. 21 at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Mich. Among the other exhibition vehicles that spotlight Dodge heritage are: * 1996 Dodge Viper GTS -- The original Viper roadster was tapped as the Indianapolis 500 pace car in 1991. The introduction of the GTS version resulted in a second pace car appearance just five years later. * 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A -- In 1966 the Sports Car Club of America created the Trans-American road racing series for "production small sedans" and GM and Ford eagerly showcased their "pony cars." With the debut of the Challenger, Dodge's first pony car, and the third generation Barracuda, Chrysler also entered Trans-Am racing. * 1968 Dodge Charger -- Completely restyled from previous models, this Charger became known as the "Coke bottle" design -- featuring a new roof line and hidden headlights. * 1956 Dodge Royal Lancer D-500 -- The D-500 was a pivotal car for Dodge, and marked the brand's transition from conservative family vehicles to absolute race-ready performance cars, making Dodge a serious contender in NASCAR, forever transforming Dodge's image. * 1939 Dodge Town Coupe -- Dodge celebrated its 25th anniversary with the introduction of this vehicle with all-new styling, evoking the glamour of ocean travel by dubbing them "Luxury Liners." * 1929 Dodge Senior Six Roadster -- The first full year of Chrysler Corporation ownership of Dodge Brothers resulted in the elevation of the company's Senior models to a level of luxury not seen in any previous Dodge vehicles. An important engineering feature of 1929 Dodge vehicles was the industry's first downdraft carburetion system to enter mass production, creating higher horsepower and easier starting. * 1915 Dodge Brothers Touring Car -- The oldest car in the exhibition heralds the Dodge Brothers conversion from the world's largest supplier of automobile parts to manufacturers of their own car. It was met with such enthusiastic success that the Dodge Brothers became the third largest manufacturer of cars in their first full year of business. | Realism Drives Automotive Artist |
| 04.19.05 (3:50 am) [edit] |

By HOWARD KOLUS Staff Writer Harold Zabady disputes the impression that his automotive paintings are like photographs because of the minute detail reflected in the colorful works. Zabady, a former high school art teacher who lives in Camp Hill, insisted with a smile that they "do look painterly." "And I like that," the genial artist added. "I don't want them to look like 8-by-10 glossies." Visitors to the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum on Route 39, west of Hershey, may make up their own minds about the lifelike quality of Zabady's works. Twenty-five of his paintings, including oils on linen and watercolors, are on exhibit in the museum's rotunda through October. According to museum curator Jeffrey Bliemeister, Zabady is the second artist to be featured at the facility, which opened in 2003 and currently displays more than 90 historic vehicles ranging from cars to trucks and buses. "We try to do an exhibition each year featuring an automotive artist," Bliemeister said. "(Zabady) is a car guy himself. He pays a lot of attention to detail. His works are like photo realism." | When cars were cars, and gas was cheap |
| 04.18.05 (7:02 pm) [edit] |
|
By Sonny Garrett Sonny Garrett is city editor ofThe Baxter Bulletin Who would have thought $1.22 per gallon gasoline would sound good? That's what the price was in Mountain Home 25 years ago in the midst of a gas war, according to an upcoming look at news of yesterday. Ah, the good old days. That's when one fast-food place offered a burger, fries and a drink for $1.84. You can't even get a gallon of gas for that now let alone a meal that could give you gas With the price of gas heading toward the stratosphere, it makes you long for the time when gas was cheap. I remember pumping gasoline for 29 cents a gallon when I worked part-time at Joe Minnick's service station in DeKalb, Texas. And that was for premium. For that 29 cents, along with gasoline you got your windshield washed, your oil checked and free air for your tires while you sat in the comfort of your vehicle. Now, for the premium price of about $2.35 a gallon and more, you get out your car, pump your own gas, wash your own windshield, check your own oil and air your own tires. What's wrong with this picture? When I was in high school (and yes, we had cars then), my buddies and I could chip in a quarter to 50 cents each, fill up the tank on one of our cars Friday night and cruise around town all weekend and still have fuel left Monday morning. I paid more the other day to gas up my lawn mower than we paid to fill up a friend's 1957 Chevy (which hadn't reached the classic car stage then). Now, if four or five friends pool a quarter each they might get a half-gallon of gas and they should be able to drive home, if it's not too far. Those were the days when cars were cars and gas was cheap. Those were the days when cars were still made of steel, six- and eight-cylinder engines were the norm and aimlessly driving from one end of town to the other was a relatively cheap way to pass the time. Now, cars are made of plastic, six-cylinders are considered high-energy engines and driving from the garage to the end of the driveway is a relatively expensive trip. Other than to stop driving, I can't think of anything folks can do about the price of gas. OPEC has the United States over a barrel, and oil companies have the rest of us over a barrel. And the cost of the barrel keeps getting higher. Sure, there was a report the cost dropped a little, but you can bet it'll be back up there soon. Hosted by pro wrestling and feature film star Bill Goldberg, AUTOMANIAC puts you in the driver's seat of the coolest, hottest, fastest and most unusual vehicles ever to hit the road. Each episode of AUTOMANIAC focuses on an unusual theme, such as vehicles driven by gangsters, police departments, hot rodders or the super rich. Incorporating a mix of history, technology, the culture and hands-on participation from Goldberg himself, AUTOMANIAC takes viewers into the garage, under the hood and out on the road to show how these amazing cars work and what makes them the hottest wheels of any era. The History Channel® one-hour weekly series AUTOMANIAC premiere airs Wednesday, June 1st @ 10 p.m. ET/PT. AUTOMANIAC host Bill Goldberg was named one of the 100 most powerful people in the sports industry by The Sporting News. Goldberg has had a longtime passion for cars and motorcycles and has a collection of over two dozen vintage cars, from an all-original 1959 Chevrolet to a 2003 Ferrari Modina 360. Goldberg's starring roles range from the upcoming films The Longest Yard and Santa's Slay to his roles in Warner Brothers Pictures' Looney Tunes: Back In Action, Ready to Rumble and Universal Soldier II. Episodes include: GANGSTER CARS (June 1st at 10 p.m.): Smooth, sleek and glamorous, these cars helped make outlaws like John Dillinger, John Gotti and Al Capone look like gentlemen. Their cars could go from zero to 60 faster than most police cars. Some were bulletproof; others weren't. This episode looks at such cars as Al Capone's 1929 V-16 Cadillac, Bonnie & Clyde's 1934 Ford Deluxe Four-Door Sedan, John Dillinger's Hudson Terraplane 8, and armored versions of the S- Class Mercedes, one of the protective cars of today's mobsters. MOONSHINE CARS (June 8th at 10 p.m.): Today's NASCAR circuit has its roots dating back to Prohibition. During that era, a variety of vehicles had roles in transporting illegal bootleg liquor. Searching for any advantage over the Feds who sought to close them down, they modified Detroit's best cars into hot wheels that they raced against each other on Sunday afternoons-and then raced for their lives and livelihood. SUPER CARS (June 15th at 10 p.m.): Superfast, supercharged and superbeautiful, these are the ultimate sports cars. The ideal marriage of art, engineering and passion, these cars are sleek, powerful expressions of affluence and freedom. Ride along in cars such as the Lamborghini Miura, Ferrari F-40, the Saleen S7, and the McLaren F1 Road Car, the fastest passenger car in the world. MUSCLE CARS (June 22nd at 9 p.m.): They're some of the baddest cars ever built. High performance, fast cars from the 60s and 70s, powered with large V8 engines. We'll trace their history from the Pontiac GTO -- the first true muscle car -- to the Yenko Camaro to the Shelby Cobra. We'll also burn rubber in Goldberg's own Mustang Lawman, a one of a kind muscle car that went to war to entertain troops overseas. DEATH CARS (June 29th at 10 p.m.): As long as there have been cars, there have been accidents and death. This episode looks at the circumstances behind the automobile-related deaths of 1950s icon James Dean, cowboy star Tom Mix, sexy screen siren Jayne Mansfield, and standup comedian, Sam Kinison. LOWRIDERS (July 6th at 9 p.m.): They spray brilliant sparks when scraping over asphalt. They dance down dark alleys like a salsa performer. They hop higher than a kangaroo. These cars are a unique combination of art and sophisticated technology welded together to create the ultimate automobile phenomenon. From their Mexican origins to today's car shows throughout the world, they have become some of the coolest cars to cruise the boulevards of America's roads. COP CARS (July 13th at 10 p.m.): These four-wheeled predators prowl the urban and rural roadways of America, hunting down speed demons, armed robbers and cold-blooded killers. From the primitive paddy wagons to today's state of the art sedans and the 2004 Crown Victoria, go on the chase in some of the most popular and powerful police cars ever made. Go under the hood to see how these vehicles are modified to be the highest performing cars on the road. CUSTOM PICK UPS (July 20th at 10 p.m.): The pickup truck is a uniquely American concept. Built tough, rugged and reliable, they were originally designed by Dodge, Ford and Chevrolet to be workhorses, but since their inception, their owners have dedicated themselves to testing the pick up truck's limits, to expand its functions, increase its power and improve its look. Meet die-hard enthusiasts who restore, trick out and customize any classic model they can get their hands on. This includes George Barris' 1929 Model A Roadster, the A La Kart, Spencer Murray's 1950/54 Chevy Dreamtruck, Bill "Maverick" Golden's Dodge A100 "The Little Red Wagon," and Gale Banks Dodge Dakota "Sidewinder," a diesel powered pickup clocked at more than 200 mph. EXTREME BIKES (July 27th at 10 p.m.): Not all bikes are created equal. These sleek, fast and innovate bikes were made for the rich or for speed-crazy racers. Hop on for a ride on the ultimate bikes in terms of technology, design and performance including the Indian 8-Valve Board Track Racer, the 2005 Ducati 999R, the BMW R32, the Vincent series C "Black Shadow" and the Easy Rider "Captain America" chopper. RIDICULOUSLY LARGE ENGINES (August 3rd at 10 p.m.): Meet the innovative hot rodders who practice their craft on an unimaginable scale. This episode will showcase extraordinary mechanical engineers who have managed to cram the largest powerplants into the most amazing vehicles -- Bryan Thatcher and his massively overpowered Nash Metropolitan; the tank-engine powered roadsters of the Blastolene Brothers; Shannon Seydel and his Jet Firetruck; and some Boss Hoss motorbike sporting engines that belong in cars. HOT RODS (August 10th at 10 p.m.): Hot Rods. They're an American pop-culture icon, revered throughout the world. Stripped down and hopped up, they started as a Southern California craze nearly a century ago, and are now found racing on streets, drag strips and dry lakes everywhere. We'll explore the colorful history of these speed demons. From the "souped up" Model T's of the 20's to the Belly Tank Lakesters of the 40s and 50s, to today's Rat Rods and fiberglass reproductions. We'll even take a ride in "Milner's Coupe", the hot rod made famous in the 1973 film, "American Graffiti." BIKES FROM HELL (August 10th at 11 p.m.): Strap on your leatherjacket for a badass ride on the motorcycles preferred by hardcore bikers. Motorcycles include the 1948 Indian Chief (the bike of choice of the Jack Pine Gypsies), "bobbed" 1941 Crocker (the bike of the Boozefighters), the chopped Harley (of the 1960s Hell's Angels), the 2003 Honda CBR 954RR (of today's Sport Bike Freaks) and the Suzuki TL 1000S (of today's Team-X Factor), which can go a jolting zero to 100 in four to five seconds. CARS OF WORLD WAR II (August 17th at 10 p.m.): They're the cars driven by the leaders during World War II. Dwight Eisenhower's 1942 Cadillac, FDR's 1939 Ford, Hirohito's 1930 Rolls Royce, and the 1931 Mercedes 770K and 1938 Maybach driven by members of the German High Command. These automobiles share a unique history from one of the darkest times in human history. AUTOMANIAC is produced by Greystone Entertainment. Executive Producer for The History Channel is Marc Etkind. | Great Automotive Comebacks |
| 04.12.05 (4:01 am) [edit] |
|
If you saw Ford's GT supercar for the first time and thought, "Wait a minute--this doesn't look new"--you thought correctly. The racy Ford (nyse: F - news - people ) was designed in tribute to the company's history. By looking like Ford's GT40 race cars of the 1960s and having a similar name, the GT is an example of an automotive comeback. The slide show that follows documents the best recent automotive comebacks. Playing off name recognition and the nostalgia factor, reviving a brand name can be a good way to jump start revenues. Just ask DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ), which has had several recent successes reviving moribund marques. In 2002 it brought the name "Maybach" back on the market after a 61-year hiatus and is now, according to Jürgen Hubbert, the Daimler board member who is responsible for Mercedes-Benz, making money off its ultra-luxury division. Even more impressive, its Chrysler subsidiary has enjoyed a banner sales year thanks in large part to the incredible success of its resurrected Hemi brand of engines (please see the slide show for more details). Chrysler took a chance that the Hemi brand would gain name recognition again; it might not have, considering its glories are decades old. On the other hand, some companies leap at the chance to display their history. Ford's Jaguar subsidiary loses money, but the cars that it does sell, it sells in part on tradition. Hence the old-school looks of its vehicles--looks that don't change too much from generation to generation. | MG club vows to keep its members motoring |
| 04.10.05 (6:07 am) [edit] |

MG DRIVERS were given some comfort after the owners' club promised it would be able to supply spares in the future. As car maker MG Rover went into liquidation, the world centre for the MG Owners' Club - which has its headquarters just outside Cambridge - promised to keep the cars on the road for as long as possible. The club has been sourcing parts at its Swavesey base for 32 years. As well as providing a comprehensive catalogue of parts for the classic models, club founder Roche Bentley said newer models would be catered for as well. "Our goal is to keep MG cars going for as long as possible at a reasonable cost," he said. "Owners should still get support from local dealers and they will be continuing to do that job in the future. "But we will also continue to offer support through the workshops and advice through the club." | CalCruising Classic Car Auctions Announces the Collector Car Gold List |
| 04.08.05 (4:05 am) [edit] |
|
Over the last 5 years CalCruising Online Auctions has built a following of nearly 10,000 high-end car collectors and enthusiasts. With over $250,000,000 in bidding activity, these high-end collectors have helped fuel the new online collector car industry. CalCruising is now offering a very unique database called the Collector Car Gold List. This one of kind database provides detailed information about this new group of wealthy online car collectors. The Collector Car Gold list is designed to benefit new or existing classic car businesses including , dealers, restorations shops, parts suppliers, appraisers, insurance agents and many more. According to president and founder Michael Schriner, “Imagine calling Ebay Motors and asking to purchase 10,000 of their most active members to enhance or start your own automotive business. As you can guess, Ebay is not interested in selling this information at any price.” According to Schriner, Ebay does not want to risk other companies from prospering online without the use of their proprietary services. Schriner feels that now is a good time for other companies to establish their own successful online transportation businesses without having to rely on one dominant auction site With the exception of Ebay Motors this type of detailed contact information about car collectors is not available anywhere else. CalCruising has designed this list into a searchable online data base which will allow members to look up potential customers by car preferences and locations. They provide complete contact information so you can get in touch with interested parties who are looking for classic car related items for sale. CalCruising is limiting participation in this program to a small group of individuals and businesses. Make sure to get in contact soon with CalCruising for additional information about this limited time offer. For additional details and pricing visit http://www.calcruisingauction... Officials: Show will go on despite possible aid cut by Ferndale, open exec director job. By Shawn D. Lewis / The Detroit News FERNDALE -- The 11th annual Woodward Dream Cruise is less than five months away, but changes within the organization that operates the event may leave the ride a little bumpier than in the past. The longtime executive director quit, citing burnout. A candidate for the position could not agree on a contract, so the post remains vacant. Then the public relations director was fired and a new PR firm, Marx Layne, was hired. Now, about 20 volunteer committee board members are left to get ready for 1.7 million visitors of the Aug. 20 event. Cruise board members say scores of other volunteers also usually show up to help with whatever needs to be done at the event. But the changes have some cruisers a little nervous. Is a Boston museum's show of rare autos collected by Ralph Lauren art? By Robert Farago / Special to The Detroit News BOSTON -- Downstairs at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, visitors can see "Away from the Flock," a lamb preserved in formaldehyde by artist Damien Hirst. Upstairs, they can visit "Speed, Style, and Beauty," an exhibit of 15 cars preserved by fashion designer Ralph Lauren that opened this month and runs through July 3. The decision to put Lauren's cars on display in an art museum has created the same sort of controversy that dogged Hirst's early work, generating whispered accusations of crass commercialism. In both cases, some critics have questioned whether the subjects are indeed art. The 15 automobiles sheltering in the museum's Gund Gallery -- and another one on display in one of the museum's lobbies -- are certainly presented as masterpieces. GTOs, Mustangs, vintage muscle cars make comeback with vroom to grow By John Jurgensen Hartford Courant ith one arm hugging the steering wheel of his 1970 Chevelle SS 396, Brian Chaffee flips the ignition key. The engine under the long berry-colored hood roars to life, then settles into an idle that sounds like a mechanical beast gargling hot motor oil. It’s a noise to make the owner of a hybrid car shudder. But it’s a shiver down the spine to committed car nuts such as Chaffee, the owner of a Middlefield, Conn., restoration shop, and a league of initiates who have surrendered to the throaty siren song of the muscle car. The reign of this automotive species was brief. Built for speed and looks beginning in the mid-1960s, its fumy demise came in the early ’70s, followed by decades of junkyard obsolescence. But now – thanks to the cycles of pop culture, baby boomers with money to burn and an automotive industry ready to cash in on its roots – muscle cars have come screeching back. BY JOE GERAGHTY BRISTOL HERALD COURIER Mar 31, 12:00 AM EST ABINGDON – The explosive growth of the NASCAR memorabilia market in the early 1990s couldn’t have come at a better time for Fred Parks. The lifetime racing enthusiast retired in 1989 from a job with an automotive parts manufacturer in Richmond. He moved home to his native Abingdon and began purchasing all the die-cast car models and NASCAR trading cards he could lay his hands on. "It was just one of those things. As NASCAR collectibles grew, he began picking up a piece here and a piece there," said longtime friend David Anderson. When Parks died in 1999, he left behind a collection that included more than 2,000 NASCAR related items. The menagerie will be auctioned off in bits and pieces at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
