Schott's classic cars to be auctioned
05.30.05 (6:23 pm)   [edit]
CINCINNATI -- Two classic Corvettes from Marge Schott's estate are set to hit the auction block next month.

Seven of the former Cincinnati Reds' owner's cars will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to a charitable foundation set up by Schott and her late husband, Charles. Schott, who often clashed with baseball's leadership, died March 2, 2004, at 75. She left an estate estimated at $125 million.

Some of the cars have been locked in storage for years and others don't run, but organizers expect proceeds to top $100,000, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Besides the Corvettes, the auction on June 11 will include a 1931 Buick Model 47, a 1946 Buick Model 1450, a 1963 Rolls Royce SC3, a 1980 Gazelle Kit car and a 1955 Nash Metropolitan.

The most powerful cars in automotive history - AUTOMANIAC
05.26.05 (6:31 pm)   [edit]

Series premiere Wednesday, June 1st @ 10 p.m. ET/PT

New York, New York, April 15, 2005 - Buckle your seat belts—it's going to be a wild ride. Hosted by pro wrestling and feature film star Bill Goldberg, AUTOMANIAC puts you in the driver's seat of the coolest, hottest, fastest and most unusual vehicles ever to hit the road. Each episode of AUTOMANIAC focuses on an unusual theme, such as vehicles driven by gangsters, police departments, hot rodders or the super rich. Incorporating a mix of history, technology, the culture and hands-on participation from Goldberg himself, AUTOMANIAC takes viewers into the garage, under the hood and out on the road to show how these amazing cars work and what makes them the hottest wheels of any era. The History Channel® one-hour weekly series AUTOMANIAC premiere airs Wednesday, June 1st @ 10 p.m. ET/PT.

AUTOMANIAC host Bill Goldberg was named one of the 100 most powerful people in the sports industry by The Sporting News. Goldberg has had a longtime passion for cars and motorcycles and has a collection of over two dozen vintage cars, from an all-original 1959 Chevrolet to a 2003 Ferrari Modina 360. Goldberg’s starring roles range from the upcoming films The Longest Yard and Santa’s Slay to his roles in Warner Brothers Pictures’ Looney Tunes: Back In Action, Ready to Rumble and Universal Soldier II.

Episodes include:

GANGSTER CARS (June 1st at 10 p.m.): Smooth, sleek and glamorous, these cars helped make outlaws like John Dillinger and Al Capone look like gentlemen. Their cars could go from zero to 60 faster than most police cars. Some were bulletproof; others weren't. This episode looks at such cars as Al Capone's 1929 V-16 Cadillac, Bonnie & Clyde's 1934 Ford Deluxe Four-Door Sedan, John Dillinger's Hudson Terraplane 8, and armored versions of the S-Class Mercedes, one of the protective cars of today's mobsters.

MOONSHINE CARS (June 8th at 10 p.m.): Today's NASCAR circuit has its roots dating back to Prohibition. During that era, a variety of vehicles had roles in transporting illegal bootleg liquor. Searching for any advantage over the Feds who sought to close them down, they modified Detroit's best cars into hot wheels that they raced against each other on Sunday afternoons—and then raced for their lives and livelihood.

SUPER CARS (June 15th at 10 p.m.): Superfast, supercharged and superbeautiful, these are the ultimate sports cars. The ideal marriage of art, engineering and passion, these cars are sleek, powerful expressions of affluence and freedom. Ride along in cars such as the Lamborghini Miura, Ferrari F-40, the Saleen S7, and the McLaren F1 Road Car, the fastest passenger car in the world.

MUSCLE CARS (June 22nd at 9 p.m.): They’re some of the baddest cars ever built. High performance, fast cars from the 60s and 70s, powered with large V8 engines. We’ll trace their history from the Pontiac GTO – the first true muscle car – to the Yenko Camaro to the Shelby Cobra. We’ll also burn rubber in Goldberg’s own Mustang Lawman, a one of a kind muscle car that went to war to entertain troops overseas.

DEATH CARS (June 29th at 10 p.m.): As long as there have been cars, there have been accidents and death. This episode looks at the circumstances behind the automobile-related deaths of 1950s icon James Dean, cowboy star Tom Mix, sexy screen siren Jayne Mansfield, and standup comedian, Sam Kinison.

LOWRIDERS (July 6th at 9 p.m.): They spray brilliant sparks when scraping over asphalt. They dance down dark alleys like a salsa performer. They hop higher than a kangaroo. These cars are a unique combination of art and sophisticated technology welded together to create the ultimate automobile phenomenon. From their Mexican origins to today’s car shows throughout the world, they have become some of the coolest cars to cruise the boulevards of America's roads.

COP CARS (July 13th at 10 p.m.): These four-wheeled predators prowl the urban and rural roadways of America, hunting down speed demons, armed robbers and cold-blooded killers. From the primitive paddy wagons to today's state of the art sedans and the 2004 Crown Victoria, go on the chase in some of the most popular and powerful police cars ever made. Go under the hood to see how these vehicles are modified to be the highest performing cars on the road.

CUSTOM PICK UPS (July 20th at 10 p.m.): The pickup truck is a uniquely American concept. Built tough, rugged and reliable, they were originally designed by Dodge, Ford and Chevrolet to be workhorses. But since their inception, their owners have dedicated themselves to testing the pick up truck's limits, to expand its functions, increase its power and improve its look. Meet die-hard enthusiasts who restore, trick out and customize any classic model they can get their hands on. This includes George Barris’ 1929 Model A Roadster, the “A La Kart”, Spencer Murray’s 1950/54 Chevy Dreamtruck, Bill “Maverick” Golden’s Dodge A100 “The Little Red Wagon”, and Gale Banks Dodge Dakota “Sidewinder”, a diesel powered pickup clocked at more than 200 mph.

EXTREME BIKES (July 27th at 10 p.m.): Not all bikes are created equal. These sleek, fast and innovate bikes were made for the rich or for speed-crazy racers. Hop on for a ride on the ultimate bikes in terms of technology, design and performance including the Indian 8-Valve Board Track Racer, the 2005 Ducati 999R, the BMW R32, the Vincent series C "Black Shadow" and the Easy Rider "Captain America" chopper.

RIDICULOUSLY LARGE ENGINES (August 3rd at 10 p.m.): Meet the innovative hot rodders who practice their craft on an unimaginable scale. This episode will showcase extraordinary mechanical engineers who have managed to cram the largest powerplants into the most amazing vehicles – Bryan Thatcher and his massively overpowered Nash Metropolitan; the tank-engine powered roadsters of the Blastolene Brothers; Shannon Seydel and his Jet Firetruck; and Boss Hoss motorbike sporting engines that belong in cars.

HOT RODS (August 10th at 10 p.m.): Hot Rods. They’re an American pop-culture icon, revered throughout the world. Stripped down and hopped up, they started as a Southern California craze nearly a century ago, and are now found racing on streets, drag strips and dry lakes everywhere. We’ll explore the colorful history of these speed demons. From the “souped up” Model T’s of the 20’s to the Belly Tank Lakesters of the 40s and 50s, to today’s Rat Rods and fiberglass reproductions. We’ll even take a ride in “Milner’s Coupe”, the hot rod made famous in the 1973 film, “American Graffiti”.

BIKES FROM HELL (August 10th at 11 p.m.): Strap on your leatherjacket for a badass ride on the motorcycles preferred by hardcore bikers. Motorcycles include the 1948 Indian Chief (the bike of choice of the Jack Pine Gypsies), "bobbed" 1941 Crocker (the bike of the Boozefighters), the chopped Harley (of the 1960s Hell's Angels), the 2003 Honda CBR 954RR (of today’s Sport Bike Freaks) and the Suzuki TL 1000S (of today's Team-X Factor), which can go a jolting zero to 100 in four to five seconds.

CARS OF WORLD WAR II (August 17th at 10 p.m.): They’re the cars driven by the leaders during World War II. Dwight Eisenhower’s 1942 Cadillac, FDR’s 1939 Ford, Hirohito’s 1930 Rolls Royce, and the 1931 Mercedes 770K and 1938 Maybach driven by members of the German High Command. These automobiles share a unique history from one of the darkest times in human history.

'Tonight Show' host may cruise the coast after retirement
05.26.05 (6:23 pm)   [edit]
KATHY HANRAHAN

Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. - To Jay Leno telling jokes is like playing a round of golf.

"You can do it for a long time," the "Tonight Show" host told the Associated Press in a phone interview a few hours after he testified in the Michael Jackson trial.

Leno, 55, said he plans to continue doing comedy for many years to come, provided his health doesn't fail.

"Probably until my stroke or I have a heart attack," he said.

The New York native, who started doing comedy at age 19, is taking his stand up act to the Beau Rivage in Biloxi on Saturday with two performances. Leno said his stage show is nothing like his monologues on the late night television program.

Volkswagen Rolls 100 Millionth Post-World War II Car, a Silver Touran Van, Off Assembly Line
05.25.05 (3:21 am)   [edit]
FRANKFURT, Germany May 24, 2005 — Volkswagen AG's 100 millionth post-World War II car, a silver Touran van, rolled off the assembly line Tuesday to cheers from factory workers and managers.

The Touran, produced at the company's headquarters plant in the central German city of Wolfsburg, is a long way from the classic Beetle that made the company's VW emblem famous.

The first model of what would become known as the Beetle was developed in 1934 under the guidance of Adolf Hitler who wanted to build a people's car or Volkswagen, in German. It first entered mass production after World War II.

Attack of the 'clones': Identity theft hits road
05.23.05 (5:47 am)   [edit]
By Toni Locy, USA TODAY

Shari Green wanted a Hummer more than any other vehicle. On Valentine's Day, her husband, Andy, surprised her with a black, fully loaded 2003 H2.

But the biggest surprise came on May 11, when Indiana State Police went to the Greens' Warsaw, Ind., home and told them that their dream ride was a "clone."

The Hummer had been stolen in Canada and its true identity disguised with a vehicle identification number, or VIN, that had been taken from another Hummer legally registered in Canada.

By switching VINs, the thieves gave the stolen Hummer the cloak of legitimacy. It became the "clone" of its legal counterpart and was passed off that way to the used-car dealer from whom Green bought it.

By Holly Bernard
Citizen Journalism Contributor

Got the hots for a Hemi? Feeling fine for a 409? Then this weekend will quench your thirst for that hot rod action. NorCal sure knows how to run an old-fashioned rodder's party, parade and show. It's all happening this weekend.

"Mom, Im bored!" the kids do their best to bug their parents. Lucky for the parents, the kids and spectators are free to gawk, gaze & glare at all the rolling pieces of art work in shiny wheels with illusion-painted bodies Pack the picnic & head on to the various venues that are offering thase All-American machineries.

Check out the rat rods, hi-boys, lead sleds, deuce coupes, the ponies, classics and the muscle cars and trucks. Most likely, the gaudy goats (GTO's) will be there too. For the moms, there are vendors to delight them while the exhibitors will excite dad's senses to pick up a cool '33 Ford shirt. In addition, the music will blare while many will admire that flamed Prowler.

’05 schedule packed with load of
05.19.05 (7:00 pm)   [edit]
LEXINGTON — When the cars hit the track this weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, it will mark the 44th year of racing. A visit by the American Le Mans Series this weekend sets the tone for an action-packed year.

The season scheduled has been shuffled to accommodate the ALMS and the EMCO Gears Classic, both of which highlight different weekends. The ALMS moves to the forefront as the season opener while the EMCO Gears Classic merges with the Triple Tuner Challenge. Also on the schedule this season are the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the Honda Supercycle Weekend and the SCCA National Championship Runoffs presented by Kohler.

Mid-Ohio is the third race of the 10-race 2005 schedule for the ALMS. The change in date allows many of the competitors a final test at one of the country’s most physically and technically demanding tracks before going to Le Mans, France, to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

VW Beetles crawl into vogue
05.17.05 (3:34 am)   [edit]
By Jenny Maher, Delaware State News
DOVER - Cute, compact and curvaceous, the Volkswagen Beetle is, perhaps, the most personified car on the market.

To its owners, the distinctive looking vehicle is more than just a mode of transportation.

It is, in essence, like a member of the family.

With headlights that look like bug eyes and a hood that seems to smile, it's hard to believe that the Beetle is just an inanimate hunk of metal.

The car appears to have a personality all of its own, as if it could spring to life at any moment.

While many associate the Beetle with the hippie era, the car was actually developed in Germany in the 1930s by Ferdinand Porsche, at the request of Adolf Hitler, who wanted an affordable car for the masses.

Mustang mystique to intrigue Triangle
05.16.05 (3:24 am)   [edit]
By Mary Meaux - The News staff writer

Muscle car, classic vehicle, an American icon - all are terms to describe the mystique of the Ford Mustang.

From mid-1964 to today, the Ford Mustang has ruled the roads, turning heads and becoming the singular item that brings people together in the form of car clubs across the nation and world.

But how can someone describe the intrinsic feeling brought on by the classic car?

Classic car buff backs first Le Mans race abroad
05.12.05 (3:22 am)   [edit]
By ANGELA JEFFS

The most famous race in the world for cars that have survived the test of time, Le Mans 24 Hours, has never been staged outside France in 82 years. Until this year, that is, when it comes to Japan.

"A 'classic' car is one made in the 1930s, according to American terminology, while 'vintage' is British and means any car made between 1919 and 1930," explains Shotaro Kobayashi. As honored chairman of Le Mans Classic Japan Organization, he is as passionate about old cars as they come

And yes, he is planning to enter one of his vintage cars in the Le Mans Classic Japan, which kicked off with a news conference in Tokyo in March. The race itself will be around the Mine circuit in Yamaguchi Prefecture from Oct. 28 to 30. Registration application for the competition is under way, and unique and historic vehicles from all over the world are signing up to show off their paces.

Little River’s 24th annual Blue Crab Festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday on the waterfront in Little River. Last year, the crowd was estimated at 40,000 for the two day event. This year, weather permitting, organizers say the crowd is likely to be larger.

For 2005, in addition to the fare of live entertainments, arts and crafts vendors, food vendors and children’s entertainment, area residents and visitors are invited to come to the show driving a classic or antique automobile. The cars may be entered into a car show which will be held on Saturday in the parking lot of the Sun Cruz Casino. the show is sponsored by the Little River Chamber and Radio Station WNMB.

The entry fee for the car show is only ten dollars. Trophies and Prizes will be awarded by a “People’s choice” judging in an informal atmosphere.

YMCA hosts car show
05.10.05 (4:07 am)   [edit]
PHOENIXVILLE - An estimated 25 vehicles were on display for a good cause during the Phoenixville YMCA Car Show Sunday afternoon.

Proceeds from the car show benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, said Jim Brower, YMCA Teen Leader supervisor.

We had a whole bunch of ideas about a fundraiser for the Relay for Life, so we decided to have a car show," said Brower. "Of course, we chose to have it on Mother's Day, but a lot of people came and left already."

With beautiful weather providing a backdrop to the bevy of automobiles shown in the lower parking lot, Brower said they weren't sure of the type of turnout the show would receive.

"We didn't know what to expect, but we're pleased with the turnout so far," he said. "We had 10 volunteers from the Teen Leader organization out here working hard in putting this event on."

From a green 1980 GMC Caballero, owned by Peg and Kermit Weinreich, of Royersford, to a white 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle, owned by Scott Weinreich, of Glenmore, there was a nice variety of vehicles present.

Tom Rakowski, of Phoenixville, brought out his rear-engine dragster, which is about two weeks from completion.

A Man and His Mustang Stand the Test of Time
05.09.05 (3:48 am)   [edit]
By: Brad Nevin | Ford Communications Network

DEARBORN, Mich., May 5, 2005 -- Few people can say they've experienced the life and times of the Ford Mustang like Joseph Errante. As a designer in Ford's Scientific Research Lab in 1961, he was one of a few people in the world to get a close look at the precursor to the 1964 Mustang production car, the Mustang I.

"The Mustang I was assembled in our building," said Errante. "I've always had a liking for cars and always wanted a sports car. But being newly married and raising a family, it just didn't fit in the picture. A couple of years later when they came out with the production Mustang, my wife and I talked it over and we decided to buy a Mustang and take good care of it. We didn't know at the time it was going to become a classic."

CLASSICS FOR SHANNONS AUTUMN AUCTION
05.04.05 (3:38 am)   [edit]
This week's Shannons Auction, held on Monday (May 2) night, featured four classic American cars available for sale. Around 35 car, motorcycle and memorabilia lots went under the hammer at Shannons auction rooms in Frederick Street, St Leonards, Sydney.
Spanning 80 years of automotive history between them, the earliest model for sale was a 1930 Packard 733 Roadster. Fully-restored to its original specifications, the Packard was fitted with all-new timbers, door sills, footboard moldings and hood, and was complete with period fittings including a map reading light, cigar lighter and trumpet horns.

Shannons valued the Packard - which is among the most coveted of all American classics for its superb engineering, classic styling and high build quality - in the range from $100,000 - $130,000.

An American automotive rebel, the Ford Mustang Fastback Mach 1, was also up for auction. The Mach 1 is a genuine Q-code 428 Cobra Jet Mustang and offered for sale with import papers and current New South Wales registration. Shannons valued the rare big block '69 Mustang in the $60,000 - $68,000 range.

Classic car buff backs first Le Mans race abroad
05.03.05 (3:24 am)   [edit]
By ANGELA JEFFS

The most famous race in the world for cars that have survived the test of time, Le Mans 24 Hours, has never been staged outside France in 82 years. Until this year, that is, when it comes to Japan.

"A 'classic' car is one made in the 1930s, according to American terminology, while 'vintage' is British and means any car made between 1919 and 1930," explains Shotaro Kobayashi. As honored chairman of Le Mans Classic Japan Organization, he is as passionate about old cars as they come.

Love of antique cars drives some

Galveston resident Bill Love has been an old car buff all his life.

His favorites are Cadillacs. He owns a 1939 Cadillac 60 Special and a 1956 Continental Mark II, among others.

He likes the luxury cars because they represent how things have changed in America.

“They’ll never make them like that again,” he said.

Mike Peterson, a retired NASA engineer, agrees.

“My car has no plastic on it,” he said. “The dashboard is all metal. I’ve got newer cars and the plastic will crack and deteriorate.”

Peterson only owns one classic car, which seems fitting since that one car has had only one owner.

He bought his 1961 Ford Galaxie shortly after he graduated from college. In 1968 he and his wife bought a second car for their growing family.

Unlike the Ford, this one had air conditioning.

There have been several second cars since then, but the white Galaxie has remained with Peterson.

“I’ve had the car for 44 years, and I have a son that’s 42, so I’ve had the car longer than my son,” he said with a laugh.

Today the car shows 135,000 miles on the odometer and Peterson says it looks almost new.

“My wife and I don’t drive that much,” he said.

Still, the old Ford requires some attention.

“I take it out once a month to make sure everything is working, but I never go out and drive it as a normal car,” Peterson said.

“I take it where it can’t be damaged.”
