| City, car auction on 3-month timetable |
| 06.30.05 (3:20 am) [edit] |
|
By Ryan Gabrielson, Tribune June 28, 2005 Scottsdale officials and Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction executives have given themselves three months to hammer out a long-term deal that will keep the city’s most lucrative event at WestWorld. In a joint statement, Craig Jackson, auction president, and City Manager Jan Dolan announced that they had set a "framework" for negotiations. "We agreed on a process, negotiating teams and a time frame, with the goal of reaching an acceptable agreement within three months," the news release states. Thursday, Jackson issued Scottsdale an ultimatum: Begin serious negotiations on a list of improvements to WestWorld, or face losing the auction. Dolan and Jackson met Monday. Jackson had set today as the deadline for negotiations to start. by Bill Vance The little town of Bothwell lies nestled amid the corn and soybean fields of southwestern Ontario's Kent County. Now some 900 souls, Bothwell was born during the Ontario oil boom of the 1860s. Houses were built in a day and some 20 hotels provided food, beds and spirits. But when the oil bubble burst so did Bothwell's dreams of grandeur. While its early oil ambitions soon faded, Bothwell now has a unique place in another oil-related world: automobiles. It is the home of Old Autos newspaper, a tabloid size Canadian commercial publication for the old car hobby. Twenty-four times a year Old Autos issues forth from a long, low, cinder-block ex-theatre on Main Street. It goes to subscribers in every part of Canada, as well as to many U.S. states, and Europe, Australia and New Zealand. | 1953 Muntz Jet |

SPENCER MURRAY Published Date: 5/23/05 When World War II halted new car production in 1942, Earl “Madman” Muntz gained his sobriquet from his flamboyant style of selling used cars in the L.A. suburb of Glendale. His was the sideshow-barker approach to auto marketing via newspapers and billboards. Muntz’s used-car sales were brisk, even when production resumed after the war ended, until assembly lines caught up with demand. Lagging sales then led him in search of some other automotive enterprise. Muntz found it across town in the person of Frank Kurtis, builder of the stylish two-seat Kurtis Sport as a sideline to his primary business of constructing Indianapolis race cars. (Kurtis roadsters finished 1-3-4-5-6-8-9 at Indy in 1954!) But it turned out building cars for the public wasn’t Kurtis’ cup of tea, so he sold the Sport’s rights and tooling to Muntz in 1949. Muntz renamed the car the Muntz Jet. | G. Chambers Williams III: Chrysler charging ahead |

San Antonio Express-News Everyone in the auto industry looks with awe at Chrysler these days, thanks to big hits the U.S. arm of DaimlerChrysler has scored with cars during the past half-decade — all while maintaining a strong presence in the truck market. It started, of course, with the PT Cruiser in 2000, that retro-styled mini-SUV/wagon that was the first of Chrysler Group's gotta-have cars. More recently we got the Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Magnum wagon. Now the new Dodge Charger — a sedan version of the Magnum and a sister to the 300 — is coming to dealerships. But that's not all. This company that at least twice in the past three decades was almost given up for dead has more surprises on the way, not only in the Chrysler and Dodge lineups, but also in its Jeep brand. | With purrs and curves, classic cars are precious |

By Cathy Free Deseret Morning News Curvy and attractive with a throaty purr, she was his first love. Years after Steve Hirst abandoned her for $15 in a junkyard, he wondered, "Was there any chance of getting her back?" For the past 30 years, he's been living the love affair all over again: Just him, the highway and his 1955 Buick. To understand why anyone would become so enamored with an automobile, look no further than Layton's Burger Stop drive-in, where classic car enthusiasts gather once a month from miles around to pop open their hoods and admire each other's interior. "It takes us back," says Steve, 61, who drives his Buick on the back roads from Farmington. "Back then, cars had class and character. When you looked up the street, you could tell if a car was a '57 Chevy or a '56 Oldsmobile. They stood out. Today you can't tell one car from another." By Kathy Uek / Daily News Staff Monday, June 6, 2005 ASHLAND -- Boston Classic Car and Motorcycle Run yesterday, the chrome and fins weren't the big attraction. It was the memories of the classics and of Lt. Louis Griffith, the veteran Framingham Police officer who died last July. For several hundred people yesterday, the classic car and motorcycle run was a trip down memory lane to help raise $20,000 to benefit the Framingham Police Athletic League, which Griffith helped establish. David Regan, sat in his '55 Chevy 210 and remembered the days of his youth. "I had one like this in the late '60's when I was a teenager," said Regan, regional sales representative for Adesa Boston. | Automaniac - Episode 1 Review - Gangster Cars |
| 06.06.05 (6:52 pm) [edit] |
|
The new show from the History Channel, Automaniac, is hosted by Bill Goldberg - a man who certainly matches the title. He starts off by letting the audience know his passion for cars and adds a little bit of a hard edge to the show, and he seems like a man who knows what he's talking about. The first episode focused on Gangster Cars and their owners. Four segments devoted to cars used by famous figures in history and then a fifth on a modern version of the Gangster Car. Each segment covered the technical aspects of the cars, while educating watchers as to their origins and uses. You not only learn that Al Capone drove a 1929 V16 Cadillac that could outrun any police car at the time, but also his weekly income and his impact on society at the time. The two aspects are very well balanced and if not careful, you almost wouldn't notice that you learned something! A comparison was made from the cars of Al Capone, John Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde to a modern day Gangster Car, the armored S-Class Mercedes-Benz. Able to withstand bomb blasts and fire from AK47s, this car embodies the values of the older versions - it's the "ultimate in safety, speed, and style." The show is a catching combination suited to both history buffs and car enthusiasts. Information is not only presented by Bill Goldberg but also by a variety of experts. Owners of the cars speak, as do historians who are knowledgeable as to the specifics of the time. As important as the sources is their obvious passion for the subject, making it easy to listen to the wealth of information they share. A show that appeals to both technical and non-technical audiences, I'll definitely be tuned in for the next episode! Stephan Kleiser - Staff Writer Wednesday June 01, 2005 The Tillsonburg News — When the Otter Mill Runners decided 10 years ago to organize a small car show on Otterville, they had no idea just how popular and long-lived their event would get. “We just thought we should organize a little show by the old mill,” Ron Smith said. “We had no idea it would become this popular.” Yet popular it is. Year after year they have seen bigger crowds. And, they once again expect to be completely booked as far as cars are concerned and that’s just the way they like it. “We’ve been getting between 210 and 220 cars in the show and that’s pretty much all we can accommodate here,” Smith said. Sponsored by the South Norwich Historical Society and organized by the Otter Mill Runners who are all historical society members, the show is the perfect event for the entire family.
