Porsche Unveils Plans For 4-Seater
07.29.05 (2:04 am)   [edit]
Panamera Should Hit Showrooms In 2009

POSTED: 5:42 am CDT July 28, 2005

Porsche and four-doors aren't usually used in the same sentence, but the German car builder is planning to change that with its Panamera sports coupe.

Porsche officials gave the go-ahead for the new four-seater that will blend the high-performance of its classic 911 and the interior roominess of its Cayenne model, according to an online news release.

The Porsche Web site also said the name comes from the legendary Carrera Panamericana long-distance race held in Mexico.

The Panamera is expected in showrooms in 2009.

Auction of hybrid, CNG vehicles proves attractive to city officials

By Shirley Hsu , Staff Writer

ALHAMBRA -- Richard Calvin came to the Southern California Clean Cities Coalition car auction Thursday with a goal in mind - to leave with a truck that runs on compressed natural gas.
"They're about 25 to 30 percent cheaper (with the lower fuel cost),' said Calvin, who was looking for a truck for the Malibu's Public Works Department.

When the bidding ended, he left with a natural gas-powered 2004 Ford F-150, worth about $30,000, he said. He got it for $21,000.

"I just made a very, very good deal,' he said.

It''s time for Lancaster''s largest drag event
07.21.05 (4:50 pm)   [edit]
Nostalgia drag racing is very popular not only with drag racing enthusiasts but also classic-car and hot-rod buffs. These two worlds of automotive interest - drag racing and show cars - will combine this weekend at Lancaster Raceway Park for the annual Sunday Niagara Nostalgia Drags and Car Show.
Lancaster's largest annual drag race event, formerly a Sunday-only show, has expanded to Saturday and Sunday this year.

One of the many featured vehicles this weekend will be the 1965 Cornet Grand-Spaulding Dodge owned by local businessman Carmen Russo and driven by veteran area drag racer Don "D.J." Raiser of Lancaster.

Epic trip for classic British car
07.20.05 (1:46 am)   [edit]
By Caroline Wyatt
BBC correspondent in Paris Very little manages to stop the traffic which roars
The penultimate pit stop in Paris
ceaselessly around the Arc de Triomphe but 50-year old Florence certainly did, with her sleek body and black-and-white top attracting curious and admiring stares from normally blasé Parisian drivers and world-weary pedestrians.

Florence is, of course, a car - a very British Morris Oxford, with a sporty black-and-white-checked roof, now on the final leg of a 20,000-mile epic fund-raising journey from Oxford, England, to Oxford, New Zealand, and back, by British Red Cross volunteers Joanne Bowlt and Tim Nicholson.

Chartered surveyor Tim Nicholson, 37, and PR consultant Joanne Bowlt, 36, gave up their jobs last year, put their possessions in storage and set out on their trans-continental motoring odyssey in May 2004.

Final Thunderbird comes off Assembly Line
07.13.05 (1:47 am)   [edit]
It was a bittersweet moment last week as the last Thunderbird was driven off the assembly line at Wixom Assembly Plant.

“We’re sad to see this car go,” said Larry Fisher, Dealer Relations manager at Wixom Assembly Plant. “But I, along with all the other employees here at the plant, am tremendously proud to have been part of the revival of this icon.”

The Thunderbird has come full circle since it was first introduced in 1955. Back then, it was a two-seater designed to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette. In 1958, the T-Bird was reconfigured to seat four people; it remained that way until production ended with the 1997 model year. In 2002, the Thunderbird was reborn with a retro look that harkened back to the early days of the automotive classic.

More than 4 million Thunderbirds have been sold in the last 50 years. The last T-Bird was the 1,160,827th one to roll off the line at Wixom.

Fisher said that the Thunderbird will always be a car that touches an emotional chord with people. The car elicits memories of the ‘50s and the movie “American Graffiti,” which featured the classic automobile.

Ann Arbor's yearly car show rolls on despite the rain

Restored city fire truck from 1924 among the over 400 'sculptures'
Saturday, July 9, 2005
BY ART AISNER
News Staff Reporter
Engine No. 5, the first gas-powered fire apparatus purchased by the city of Ann Arbor, in 1924, was on city streets again after decades of dormancy and 40 years after it was officially retired by the city.

It was one of more than 400 antique, exotic, classic, concept and art vehicles on display during 11th annual show, which converts the heart of downtown Ann Arbor into a walking auto show for eight hours. And just like the vintage roadsters and classic muscle cars featured in the show each year, the American LaFrance fire truck drew continual crowds of curious onlookers and history buffs.

"It caught her eye more than any other car here and it is quite a sight,'' said Vania Rasche, referring to her granddaughter Isabella, 3, who climbed into the driver's seat to ring the truck's 75-pound, nickel-plated warning bell.

Restoring and showing cars a hobby at OMTD
07.07.05 (1:43 am)   [edit]
By Todd G. Higdon / Daily News Staff Writer
GRANBY - One of the biggest attractions for the 22nd annual Old Mining Town Days was the Highway 60 Car Show, held last Saturday.

More than 75 cars and trucks ranging from the early 1900s to today were on hand at the show.

Owners of the vehicles started showing up at 8 a.m. at the Dick Smith Park. As they parked their vehicles, the fist thing they did was to clean up their vehicles and await for spectators to view the vehicles.

"There is a lot of hard work that go into these cars," said Hershel Tanner of Granby, who was sporting a black 1951 Kaiser car.

Tanner has had his 1951 Kaiser for about 15 years.

"I worked for Kaiser Steel in Eagle Mountain, Calif. for 12 years," Tanner said. "Now the town is a ghost town."

One day, after moving back to Granby, he went looking around at yard sales.

Iola Wisconson gears up for tens of thousands of car buffs
07.06.05 (2:53 am)   [edit]
By Andrew Dowd
For the Marshfield News-Herald

IOLA - It's the wood, not steel, that made featured cars at this year's Iola Old Car Show good in their heyday.

Collector vehicles with wooden parts and accents, and antique wagons are the featured autos at the 33rd annual Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet, which will bring thousands of people to the small village this weekend.

About 156,000 people attended last year's show, and Mary Schwartz expects even more this year if the weather is nice.

An administrative assistant with Iola Old Car Show Inc., Schwartz helps coordinate 3,000 volunteers from 110 service organizations who work at the show.

With a population of 1,300 people, Iola alone cannot accommodate the influx of visitors. So cities within a 60-mile radius will see extra business at their restaurants and hotels, Schwartz said.

• What: 33rd annual Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet - Thousands of classic cars, vendors and spectators will come to the small community of Iola for the show, which covers 309 acres with collector cars on display, a swap meet, auction and sale for autos that are 20 years or older.

• When: Begins 6 a.m. Thursday and ends 5 p.m. Sunday
• Where: Off Highway 161, on the east side of Iola
• Cost: $8 daily, $15 for the weekend and free for children 10 and under

Vintage Grand Prix truly a classic
07.05.05 (2:36 am)   [edit]
By Thomas Zuck
FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, July 4, 2005

The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is one of the best vintage events in the country. It is unique because it is the only one that runs on public streets, and the race has grown since the early 1980s to include car shows all over Allegheny County.
The event is completely staffed by volunteers and has donated more than $1.75 million to the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Valley School since 1983.

The 2005 version of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix will start Friday with a test and tune session at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Big Beaver Borough. There will also be vintage races from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at BeaveRun.

The Historic Rally Car Register has won the contract
07.04.05 (2:50 am)   [edit]
The Historic Rally Car Register has won the contract to promote the MSA British Historic Rally Championship for a further three years. The new deal follows an extensive evaluation by the MSA of all major rally championships in the UK.

The HRCR has managed the championship for the last five years and has developed the BHRC into a highly successful series, contested by cars spanning 20 years of rallying history, and regularly attracting entries of around 60 cars to each event.
