Classic cars and my mechanical ineptitude

Hot August Nights is over for another year, and none too soon. Many a retina has been seared from staring at the blinding chrome of a thousand classic cars.

Nevadans are big on their car shows. I know a few people in Fallon who have poured many hours, not to mention the entire contents of their wallets, into a vintage rod. They buff the paint until they get tennis elbow on the night before a show and shine.

Every summer they travel from Winnemucca to Ely with their classic car in tow. Once there they pull out the lawn chairs and sit a spell. There's instant camaraderie among guys when it comes to car talk.

It's a Helluva Cruise ... and it's back After a 5-year hiatus

They could have planned a golf outing or a lot of other events, but organizers of this summer's Holy Spirit Catholic Church School fundraiser decided to be a bit more splashy.

Their 15-mile Helluva Cruise coming up Saturday night will revive a much-loved local event and take classic car buffs from the heavenly confines of the church grounds in Green Oak Township to the center of Hell.

"We've got a lot of things planned to make this a very special cruise,'' said event chairman Todd Borek of Hamburg Township. "We wanted to do something unique that would bring all kinds of people to our parish.''

They may be older, but they can still shine and show as good as the newer models
08.04.05 (1:41 am)   [edit]
The imports took a backseat over the weekend and made way for the forefathers of the auto enthusiast industry at the 2nd Annual Classic Car Show, sponsored by Newstalk K57, the Acanta Mall and the Rock.

Although the weather prevented some pre-registered owners from taking out their hidden treasures, enough classic owners showed up to display their rides and make the event a success.

"The 10 cars we had still made for a pretty nice show," says Ron Diaz of K-57, who organized the event. "It drew a crowd that pretty much stayed throughout the day."

Visitors got to see cars that rarely see the light of day, such as Erwin Tudela's 1932 Ford Roadster, Jose Cruz's 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner, Alan Sablan's gorgeous gray 1965 Chevy Corvette and Eileen Benavente-Blas' 1952 Jaguar Roadster.

Classic car buffs seek divine intervention for their wheels
08.01.05 (4:15 am)   [edit]
By Angie Valencia-Martinez, Staff Writer

HANSEN DAM -- Donning a Dodgers baseball cap and a stole with hot-rod flames and a checker-flag border, the Rev. Cirilo Bailon on Saturday sprinkled holy water on Tony Carrillo's 1949 Chevy pickup.
Bailon said a quick prayer and made the sign of the cross, asking for divine intervention.

"Dad gave it to me when I was 12," said Carrillo, a 30-year-old car fanatic from Hemet. "The motor didn't run ... You name it, it was wrong.

"I rebuilt the motor, primered it, put on new tires. I made it here. I want it blessed."
