Restored city fire truck from 1924 among the over 400 'sculptures' Saturday, July 9, 2005 BY ART AISNER News Staff Reporter Engine No. 5, the first gas-powered fire apparatus purchased by the city of Ann Arbor, in 1924, was on city streets again after decades of dormancy and 40 years after it was officially retired by the city. It was one of more than 400 antique, exotic, classic, concept and art vehicles on display during 11th annual show, which converts the heart of downtown Ann Arbor into a walking auto show for eight hours. And just like the vintage roadsters and classic muscle cars featured in the show each year, the American LaFrance fire truck drew continual crowds of curious onlookers and history buffs. "It caught her eye more than any other car here and it is quite a sight,'' said Vania Rasche, referring to her granddaughter Isabella, 3, who climbed into the driver's seat to ring the truck's 75-pound, nickel-plated warning bell.
